Carolyn Keene
Carolyn Keene was a pen name that the Sratemeyer Syndicate used for the writers on the Nancy Drew stories. Mildred Wirt Benson and Harriet Adams were the two main authors of the Nancy Drew books. Some other authors include: James Duncan Lawrence, Walter Karig, Nancy Axelrad, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., Margaret Scherf, Susan Wittig Albert, and the editors at Grosset and Dunlap. Mildred was born in Ladora, Iowa, United States in 1905 and passed away in Toledo, Ohio at the age of 96 in 2002. In 2001, she received a special Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for helping write the Nancy Drew books. She got a degree in English from The University of Iowa in 1925, then got her masters degree in journalism in 1927. Her favorite Nancy Drew story was The Hidden Staircase, the second mystery in the series. She wrote under a dozen names and published more than 130 books. Harriet was born in Newark, New Jersey, United States and died in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey at the age of 89 in 1982. Her famous works were the Nancy Drew books. She received her education from Wellesley College. She ran the syndicate for 52 years. Her father forbade her to work outside the home, so she edited manuscripts at home.
